If you need to use a 3 piece coupling to get an elbow spun on would you need one of both end of the elbow or just one? Thanks

Only one assuming you can assemble the elbow on to the other side of the conduit by spinning either the conduit or the elbow.

It really depends on a few factors, such as which direction you're running and whether you can spin them on before strapping the conduit, etc., and often on how creative you are.
