A customer of mine asked me if I could fix this lamp for her. She’s a widow and this lamp was her husband’s, so its important to her. I’m not sure how to approach something like this, so I’m looking for advice. She has a lamp shade that goes with it and I’m waiting for her to send me a picture. Y’all have any ideas on this one? Thanks a lot.

It looks like there is one incoming cord and one outgoing cord, probably to a light inside the cabin.

If I'm right, you need to find a lamp socket with three terminals, for lamp/cabin/both/off switching.

The two wires already twisted together would be the common, to be attached to the silver screw.

The color of the wire draped around the outside is (probably) the 110 coming in... the two dark wires are that supply. Brown probably heads to the light in the cabin.

Any way to get to the inside of the cabin? Will the roof slide up the rod?

Having seen similar items, the lamp inside may just be a Christmas tree bulb. Good candidate for a replacement with an LED.

I wouldn't touch it. See if there is a local lighting store that will work on it. It isn't UL listed and I can only imagine the hassle it will be to wire properly

A friend of mine that works at a local supply house does about 40-50 fixture repairs a month. He showed me some of them and I told him I would be embarrassed putting on the curb for garbage collection. I know they have sentimental value and that's why business is thriving.

For 101 ways (including at least one "Safe Way") search for >how to rewire a lamp<.

re: not UL listed-- does UL listing include the entire lamp, or just the cord-and-socket?

I have never seen such a thing. Anything like that would be within a separate canopy under the lamp socket.

A little more looking at the lamp by the OP is in order, mainly to see if there might be a separate switch someplace for the cabin light. That would probably be the best way to handle this anyway. Splice into the line cord in the cabin, drill a hole and put a twist switch someplace on the side.

This way you have a single cord going up to the lamp socket as it should be.

How do you violate a UL listing if that is a handmade one-off? If you install whatever parts are used in a listed manner.

Dude why are you talking about UL listing. For one it’s not part of the home wiring, two if your that parodied get cash( while it still around)
3. 99% of the crap everyone has in there home from Amazon is more of a fire hazard than fixing that lamp.
Put an inline fuse if your that worried.
I understand it should be listed but come on.

I have a similar lamp in my basement. Got it from Lowes several years ago. but the post does not go through the roof. it is outside of the cabin.
3 position twist switch.
1st click inside cabin
2nd click upper lamp w/o cabin light
3rd click both lights.
cabin light is in floor of cabin and is probably a 7 watt night light bulb.

You didn't play with wiring lamps as a youngin? How did you get the electrical bug then? This is easy! Way simpler than a machine control panel. Now, whether one can get their hourly rate finding the right socket (and harp) and installing it is the question.

Bingo!

They've got everything you've ever wanted for lamp restorations.
Funny thing with my experience, we have an 8-lamp chandelier that had maybe 3 bulbs working and was ready for a rewire, so I got the parts, including 8 sockets, 8 bulbs and a roll of wire. I took the fixture down and hung a temporary LED light that worked :) About a year and a half later I got around to finishing it, pretty much at my wife's insistence, so I labored through each connection, and finally installed the chandelier, and it was beautiful. A couple weeks later there's an email from antique lamp supply that shows the renovation of a chandelier that looked just like mine, complete with a video showing the work involved. Total time involvement to rewire that lamp was estimated at 1 1/2 hours o_O 🤣
That seems to happen for my at-home projects!

Apparently he's never been to a craftshow that's full of handmade lights. My brother used to run a ceramic shop and he made lights to sell at craftshows. He had an insurance bond to cover him if something he made caused an issue.
