I?ve seen large flags being hung from the hook of large cranes / heavy machinery. I was wondering if contractor?s doing this display take any precaution/consideration regarding lightning strikes.

Thank you for your response.

I'm not seeing how a flag would significantly alter the chances or severity of a lightning strike.

Not to be too argumentative, but I don't see flagpoles burning down all over the place.

I would be more concerned about the forces imposed on the structure by wind blowing against the flag.

The crane is is usually going to be there whether they hang a flag from it or not. Large cranes are not taken down until the project is finished and the crane is no longer needed. Some are large enough it may take several days to take down/set up.
