Flexible cord

I work in industrial maintenance and I have a question about flexible cord. It seems that all of the motors and limit switches, photo eyes, ect., in our plant are wired with flexible cord.I have been reading in article 400 and don't really understand how this is to code?

NFPA 79, and possibly UL 1740, among others.
