As pointed out by tryinghard, there is no NEC code requirement for this.

It is just a best trade practice, and a good design.

I agree with the others reply that there is nothing in Art,450 that would require this however as noted it would be a better installation for several reasons one of which is that most transformers are not secured of bolted down so if it got bumped or slid it would not put undue pressure on a fixed wiring method.

I'd say to minimize transformer hum transmitted throughout the structure's branch circuit wiring.

I agree with what George posted. To eliminate the hum and noise that can be transmitted due to the vibrations from the transformer.

Sometimes it is much easier to use a trough as the wiring method for larger size transformers. I have seen many of the larger transformers wired as such and no real issues with the transmission of sound through the trough.
