flood zone

I have an architect that wants a receptacle in a flood zone. He says this box will make it ok. (see link) http://www.pondandfountainpros.com/underwater-junction-box.shtml Is anyone familiar with this? Can I put a recept in it and still be water tight? It is for a TV/monitor. The TV/monitor mounts facing up in a table and is interactive with the public. The table cannot be any higher due to ADA (disabilities). Does ADA supersede the flood zone for this? I don't think this jbox is going to work. Maybe the Americans with Disabilities Act will let me get away with a recept that is several inches below the 100 year flood plane?

Think it through a bit. How is a "receptacle" going to "receive" anything, like a plug, without being open? If it's open at the part where you plug something in, it is no longer water tight regardless of how nifty the box is behind it. He's just wrong. There are watertight rated plugs that go into receptacles with a rubber lining on both that makes a seal, but I have no idea if that would satisfy your flood zone issue.


But is this an "Essential Electrical System" (article 517) for a health care facility, an Emergency System (article 700) or a Critical Power Operations System (article 708)? Because I don't see where "Flood Zone" is an issue for a receptacle, unless this is something new to me and/or local to you. If it's local, I suggest you have found a glitch that needs discussing with a local AHJ. The intent, when I have run across local flood zone restrictions before, is to avoid having to constantly replace electrical equipment (large equipment, like panels and transformers) after frequent floods. I've not run into anyone worried about what happens to a receptacle for a TV. Flood happens, receptacle is trashed and replaced. Done.

In New Jersey in the Sandy storm impacted area there is only one allowance for a receptacle below the flood water elevation. It would be required to meet life safety. I would definitely speak to your AHJ.
