Floor plugs & cords under carpet

I just got this E mail from a customer.
Check it out.

Hi, 77401

In our formal living room our two floor outlets are not in a great place for the rug and furniture we have purchased. We have two table lamps on two end tables that need to be plugged in somehow. Here is what my sister-in-law suggested:

Also, here are some thoughts on the Living Room lamps:

1. You could have the lamps "hard-wired" into the outlet that falls under the rug. A good electrician can do this. It involves removing the plugs altogether and wiring directly into the electrical box. The downside is that you would not be able to move the lamps without re-hiring an electrician. The upside is that you can use the lamps and not see the plugs.

2. You could switch out the existing lamp plugs with "low profile" plugs that have about a 1/4" profile. An electrician could do this. The brass plates could be removed from your floor outlet and the lamps plugged into the outlet that falls under the rug. You would have two small bumps under the rug.

We really want the two lamps to work. Do either of these suggestions sound doable? If yes, what do you think the charge would be?
(Name withheld)

Is it me or are people acting stupid tonight?

I love it !

So are you going to be a "good" electrician or not ?

David

Perhaps you could suggest that they use a receptacle from an adjacent room, and then use a wireless transfer device to get power to the lamps? ;)

I can imagine Nicola Tesla turning over in his grave.

Apparently a 'good electrician' is one that will do whatever the customer asks.

If they need an electrician that good they should call a home handyman.

You know, the ones in the local paper that do plumbing, painting, electrical, basement clean outs, rake the leaves, roofs, heating all from a 1976 Matador

That Matador looks like the one we cut the top off of in high school. And I think the stuff we smoked while doing that, the sister who wrote that email got hold of. :)

I politely told her I couln't recommend any 120v wiring under any carpet or rug.
Then I said for her sister in law to call any fireman or any inspection department and ask for their opinion of my opinion.
Sad part is they will find some wanta be that will do it. And then tell others how great he is.You did your part so just add her name into your computer black list.

Yep! When we declined replacing a 15a breaker with a 20a, and explained why, she said she'd find someone who would. Next time she saw us, she bragged that it was done, and I asked her to add 911 to her speed-dial list.

Niiiiiice. My mother in law asked me to do something similar and wouldn't take no for an answer. Nor did she like it when I told her it was against code. Finally, I told her, "Sure I'll do it. You have decent fire insurance." She finally saw the light.
