I hold a Georgia Journeymans license but recently moved to Naples.

I would like to get the Masters License either for the state of Florida or a local Collier county license.

Does anyone know what the different requirements are? Also what kind of books are necessary for the state exam? Do either allow Tom Henry's "Key Word Index"?

Florida and Georgia reciprocate licenses so do you think that Fla would accept my Journeyman's license in lieu of letters from contractors?

Any good advice would be appreciated. Thanks alot!

Re: Florida License

I would suggest you get yourself a copy of the Chapter 489, Part II, Florida Statutes and Rule 61G6 Florida Administrative Code from the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation if you have not already.

You have the 2 choices as you have indicated. There is an EC which is the state license and an ER which is the local license. The state license is the harder one to obtain, as there are more requirements to meet and the exam is more involved than the local Experior Exam. The are nearly 25 references that can be use and may be needed to take and pass the state exam.

The local exam only permits the use of the NEC. This is the only reference you will need anyway. Neither exam provider permits the use of the "Key Word Index". Passing this exam permits you to only work in the jurisdication you register in. This means you need to obtain a master certificate of competency and an occupational license for each location you wish to work. Some areas like Lee County to the north of you does not permit ER contractors to work in their county. So that is something to consider.

Generally speaking anything and everything you can attach to your application to verify experience will help. You may have to wait for a year of residency before they even permit you to sit for the exam. The local exam is given just about every month in Fort Myers, whereas the state exam is only given twice a year. It usually takes about a year to qualify for the state exam anyway.

Good Luck!

Re: Florida License

I would highly recommend the State EC License, it has many advantages. I just recently got mine and it took a little over 10 months from when I first sent in my application to take the exam to when they issued my EC number. Contact me if you would like more details.
Hope this helps you out.

Ditto!

Don't waste your time getting anything less then the EC License if you plan on working for yourself.

The Required books for the 7.5 Hr exam are:

1)Contractor's Manual
2)Engineering Sign Structures
3)NFPA 780
4)NFPA 72
5)NFPA 101
6)Code of Federal Regulations
7)Design & Control of Concrete Mixtures
(Yes Concrete...I'm NOT kidding!)
8)Security
9)UL 365
10)UL 381
11)Neon Techniques
12)Alarm Systems
13)Fire Alarm Signaling Systems
14)Telecommunication Systems
15)NFPA 70

Contact the Florida Department of Buisness & Federal Regulation (Tallahassee) for an application.

Good Luck!

Dave
