Im working in a school and they have a typical 2 foot flouresent light fixture with the tube exposed, mounted straight to the wood. Is this legal with the wood being a combustible material.

Re: flouresent light in showcase

Its lok to surface mount flouresent fixtures as long as the material is not low density fiberboard.
This is assuming its a newer fixture, not an old ballast. You could always mount the fixture on spacers to let air circulate behind it.

Please provide more details about the exact location of this fixture.

Unless there is a local building, health dept, or state code the answer is no.

Food prep areas require lamp gaurds or covers.

MH, HPS, MV lamps with an "E" classification must be installed in enclosed fixtures.
