I'm doing work at a larger factory (maybe 300,000 Sq ft) and started noticing things that aren't to code. I brought it up to the foreman and he pretty much said how else we going to do it. Here's a list of some of the things and I'm pretty sure they are common violations and the code needs updating. I appreciate your guys opinions.

When doing a 480v drop from a bus duct we run emt from bus to joists that are about 6 feet away, then drop rigid 25 feet until it's next support.

When running perpendicular across the joists they are 6 feet away so technically we need a code keeper to go from box to next joist. We don't use them there.

Troughs above panels that have way more than 30 wires crossing before going up to their respective pipes. I think the inspector just looks at these like j boxes because the wires mainly go straight through the troughs short ways.

There were a couple pieces of emt going up 15 feet before support, foreman said owner was a cheap ***

That's all I can think of, have a nice weekend

That's not what I'm saying at all, though using emt instead of rigid was just cheap. A lot of the stuff seems fine and had passed inspection. I'm just wondering if anyone else does this stuff.

Inspection?

I have worked in Michigan factories since 1975 and the ONLY time I ever saw an inspector at one was on a job I did that the owner (sole proprietor, 4 employee shop) requested one for a heat treat furnace I wired up. The inspector spent about 4 minutes looking at the pipe and the inside of the panel, the rest of the time we chatted about this that and the other thing.

I have been in dozens of factories and have seen literally hundreds of code violations and not once have I ever seen the owner of a factory get gigged for a code violation in an existing factory, nor have I ever seen an electrical inspector in one looking for code violations.

They will show up on new construction, but once that's done, you won't see them there again.
