Re: Foot handle

There is an excellent read on this in Ch. 14 of
Richter/Hartwell. Practical Electrical Wiring 19th Ed. Minneapolis: Park Publishing, 2005.

It describes the footcandle meter, and modern FC standards for various lighting situations. Copywright prohibits reproduction, but local libraries have carried older copies for years.

Re: Foot handle

If you would like to know recommended lighting levels for various occupancies I would recommend the IES Lighting Handbook. I think the latest is the ninth edition. Go to their website. It's a great resource. Best of luck.
