I have seen a lot messy cable and mc stringing but I have never seen a picture like iwire posted. I know the OP was about the cable tray, but the pics could make one dizzy.

But I think the picture with the NM run side by side would be probably be extreme on the neat side. I'm not sure how practical that would be day-to-day.

I probably have laid out some NM and MC that might look messy to some but I would not consider it sloppy. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For the most part, I don't have an issue with a bundle of cable running in some locations and not being laid out with a straightedge.

I was curious as to what bob thought would be a non-nauseating combination of neat and messy. I thought he could post a pic of something he was happy with, even if he might be subjected to the critiquing eyes we have on this forum.

I saw the request but I really don't have any pictures of my own MC / NM work.

My own work would certainly be considered messy by some here, it is serviceable and generally in compliance with the NEC. I will admit that I do not always get a support within 12" of a box etc. I am far from perfect but that place was a mess.
 
i like romex a lot and this its probably the safest wiring method when used within the NEC. it has its own place (our homes and non plenum office buildings). i worked with a few guys that stick that stuff underground in conduit, outside, and other nonNEC approved places.

i do enjoy seeing quality work done in romex. if romex is installed in a quality professional manner it looks beautiful. MC just looks like a bunch of metal pipes all over the place when installed but it can look nice just as well

my opinion is besides 100% explosionproof rigid conduit or MI cable romex with a plastic box is probably the most safest wiring method on the market

im sure your work looks alright. i run my wires across rooms over strapping all the time to save wire. some might think it looks terrible but i dont care that much. when i work on my own i run it 90 degree angles and it looks good but thats what i like to do. nothing looks more disgusting than when someone takes romex out of the middle of the coil and runs it with all those twists and loops in it i hate that. romex laid flat no twists at all looks perfect no matter if its 90 degree angles or diagnal across the room :) get some pics of your work so we all can rip it apart:grin::grin:
 
What do you suppose the box fill works out to on those j-boxes in pic #5? From where I'm sitting, I'd say more than a little over-filled.

I'm not justifying the work. It is totally hack. And as Bob said, there are many of the same stores that are also wired entirely in NM cable that are not nearly this bad.

In my opinion, faster is not always better. Stand by your installations and take pride in your work.

Bob,

There are more ways than one to skin a cat. Others who are aware of risk/fire potential

(if in fact, it exists, in spite of the hammered dog do-do the mess represents, it may actually work safely, but has potential for a lot of other realistic attacks as to expected work standards in America, that were/are being compromised)

such as the store's insurance underwriter, the state fire marshall,

(I'd inspect the work, but don't have the week neccesary to check all that would need to be checked. I tell you this Bob, as this is a clear violation of 110.12 which is pretty much unenforcible, but if they do this kind of work, am sure there are many violations that would demand a rework, and a review of the master, by the contractor's exam board, who approves such work for release to the public)

local Chamber of Commerce associates, and anyone in particular, that cares for the home community, may want to know who said contractor was, and what could be done to insure that this contractor misses opportunities to bid jobs, for a host of reasons.

Standing by ourselves shouting, does nothing, when we are all standing together, with a pitch fork, and take action, then we are a force to be dealt with. Use your friends for the betterment of the community, not to accept trash tossed at your neighborhood, but for a reasonable expectation of standards that acceptable to all who use the services, ponied up in your area.
