My website costs about $4.95 a month, and I have thousands of e-mail address capabilities, 1 Terabyte of data transfer per month, and the ability to have a php forum...
More expensive plans go up to about $30 a month, that could cover the data transfer of this site...

Nonetheless, I agree about the forum being about 90% of the traffic. I also think that it boosts sales for Mr. Holt... and that is alright!

More traffic = more views of your product = more sales of your product.

I think the free forum is a terrific idea. It benefits us all... including Mr. Holt.

I know one site that uses the revenues to help guys with training. They don't ask for money they just use the money that the site generates with traffic.

40,000 members, $1 a year to sign up. $40k most likely $38k maybe down to $18k(? This might cut back on spam) profit a year. Have an monthly drawling for a free Mike Holt training class or material?

With professional site you can not use any ole host. Even the 30$ plans are not designed for sites like Mikes. Even though the the bandwidth may be the Apache Admins limit the number of connections to both the DB and the http server. This is generally true for shared hosting. a dedicated server setup is much more expensive but still not a huge amount. If I ran mikes site I would have no problem paying for the hosting considering how many active members I have in addition to the wealth of info contributed. If I wanted revenue from the site I woudl CONSIDER, only consider putting SMALL SELECTIVE amounts of ad's on the site. SMALL is the key the more junked up it is the less traffic it draws. That's why I love Mikes site and buy from him. I give him my money with purchases because I refuse to give AD centered cites any money. As soon as a site requires registration to view something, or pops ads at me, and does nay of the hundreds of annoying things sites do..... I am gone. There too much competition on the net to be picky. Treat users right and you will get them.... Just like this site..... No electrical forum beats this one, Plain and simple.
