Does anyone have experience with opening the front of a FPE type NM 3phase 600 amp 600volt breaker with the line connections energized? I need to safely remove the lugs to reconnect new wires. Thanks

I don’t like turning an FPE breaker off and on, let alone open a cover live! I think I would opt for a utility shutdown, not worth the risk. If you survived the arc flash, months in a hospital burn unit would not be a good vacation!

Talk them into replacing the panel. I wouldn’t want my name on that panel. Way to much of a fire hazard

OP has an industrial/commercial panel. I think you are confusing the resi panels with the bad name with his.

Are you saying FPE commercial/industrial panels are not bad or They do not have to be changed? I am actually in a process of designing SPD to be installed on the load side of FPE panels with dedicated circuit breaker. Should I upgrade the panel, or should It be fine to keep it.

There was never an issue with the industrial / commercial product lines made by FPE, their problems were with the Stab-Lok residential load centers and plug-on breakers.

That said, I would never remove a cover and work on a molded case breaker live. The risk is too high and I have oo many people depend on me...

I have to disagree, it is very hard to trip a FPE bolt in breaker, but then the same can be said about GE..........
