It has to be "X" to drain the condensate away from the attachment cap, a + would allow all the non existent water to drip onto a cord cap and wet the blades.
 
I worked for a company that insisted the screws on standard toggles be vertical
and decora switches horizontal,all receptacle screws were to be horizontal.

True-- but when they are both up the circuit is also open. Only when one is up and the other down is the circuit closed. Many people only use one end of the 3 way and they like the switches to be down when off. I do it more for myself when testing out a house. If there is a short anywhere in the switching I can tell immediately--- all switches down and one by one I turn them up to see if there is a problem. It's not that hard to do, it just takes a little more concentration.

When I have to replace a switch plate, I always buy two. I put the first one in, and count how many times I have to turn the screw, before the plastic switch plate cracks. Then, when I put the other one on, I tighten the screws one turn fewer. ;) :grin:
 
On my 1st day as a helper - plating devices throughout recently finished job w/h/owner breathing down my back--and lining up all screws verticallysaid he was taught to do it that way working as an electrician in the NAVY .Asked my boss later--he said that although this h/owner was known for being somewhat neurotic this was an old electrician styling touch that showed a different level of proffessionalism.
It was a simple enough thing to do which took asbsolutely no extra time .
What I found interesting was how many other h/owners noticed it when I subsequently made it part of my installation habits.

Did the screw have to be verticle if the duplex itself was horizontal?
