furnace problem caused by open neutral

I have several pull string lights connected to a constant power source in my basement. I wanted to disconnect them from constant power and connect them to the switched circuit powering the one light that has a switch by the entry.

I went to disconnect and cap off the existing power source at the first lamp/junction box where the non-switched basement lights are connected to the panel. Apparently the neutral was also connected to the furnace at the end of that circuit, as it began to make a loud humming noise and blew the furnace breaker in addition to the basement light circuit I had shut off.

Well now I reconnected everything as it was and restored power but the furnace will not blow air or heat. I'm guessing it's some kind of problem caused by the floating neutral that was created.

Has anyone had an experience such as this? Any ideas on what could have possibly failed in the furnace? Perhaps the LV power supply or control board?

Thanks a lot,
Roy
