The price of class CC and midget fuses has become eye-watering: $15+ per fuse! What makes these little things so expensive, other than ...because we can?

Agreed, but (especially) class CC fuses have always seemed too expensive for a little tube filled with a melty wire and some sand.

Very special sand? Can only be mined on the new moon from next to a willow tree?

(I'll venture that most of the costs seem to be in the record keeping and QC testing.)

Quite likely... every production run almost certainly requires a statistically meaningful number of units tested. Destructively.
