The NEC does not tell us that. The NEC is only concerned with safety, and what makes this safe is the GFI. But I would keep it far enough away that water will not splash onto it during the normal operation of the sink.

By eager2learn: know that G.F.I.'s are to be located within 6' of a sink or where any water is located
Keep in mind the in a kitchen (dwelling) they are required for all receptacles serving counter tops. And in commercial kitchen all receptacles are required to be GFCI protected.
