I know that G.F.I.'s are to be located within 6' of a sink or where any water is located but my question is how close is to close

The NEC does not tell us that. The NEC is only concerned with safety, and what makes this safe is the GFI. But I would keep it far enough away that water will not splash onto it during the normal operation of the sink.

Keep in mind the in a kitchen (dwelling) they are required for all receptacles serving counter tops. And in commercial kitchen all receptacles are required to be GFCI protected.
