Hi everybody:
We have galvanized rigid conduits running inside a sealed metal structure which was pressure tested.Our client insists we shall use stainless steel conduits, of course this is out of our budget. Is there any section inside the NEC that could back me up on this issue . Thanks in advance.

So what is the purpose of the "sealed metal Enclosure"? Is this flooded with liquid that would cause the conduits to rust or corrode? A little more detail please.

what is the purpose and process of the pressure vessle?
did the specs you quoted the job by specify stinless conduit? if they didn't, you may have grounds for getting the customer to pay for the stainless.

ps, stainless steel 304, 310, or other? big price differences and you need to check reguardless of who foots the bill.

Sorry,
If the conditions of the installation require stainless, then stainless it must be. See 110.3(A)(1). What does the contract say? May be time to hire a lawyer.

Sorry i didn?t make myself clear, the conduit are runnig inside a leg of a ship to shore container crane. The only requirement of the contract is that the installation shall meet the enviroment conditions: Salty fog, industrial fumes, Humidity 100%, 50 C ambient temperature. Thanks

If I were your client, and I wanted stainless, I would have said stainless. Just stating that the installation shall meet "the enviromental conditions" is vague, and just asking for trouble. It almost sounds like they are trying to get something for nothing.

What about PVC covered conduit? (I think PVC covered is what I am thinking of. It is rigid conduit with a black coating of some material that can be scratched off. I have seen it in locations where caustic chemicals are present. You can even buy the coating in a bucket to paint on any areas that got scratched during installation.)That would resist the salt, fumes and humidity.

If the environment is all you are concerned with, I would consider aluminum or PVC coated rigid conduit commonly called 'robroy'. However, PVC coated conduit requires extra care such as special threading dies and strap wrenches in order to achieve a quality installation...both increase costs.

With a 50C ambient temp and 100% humidity, it would be a good idea to install low-point drains. Certainly watch your wire derating.

Personally, I would use aluminum.

Aluminum ? , I would not use aluminum near the salty enviroment.

I think the PVC coated rigid gal is the way to go.I would compare my prices of PVC/Gal vs Stainless Steel and consider all labor factors.
