I've just looked those sections up, and I have to think otherwise.Things are still a little tentative, but if we follow it to 225.6, we get no ostensible prohibition of THHN, merely a sizing restriction:
.

THWN strung up on a messenger cable is not a listed assembly.

THWN is not listed as sunlight resistant.

225.6 is refering to the size of the cable.

Well, I'll concede that it is not a listed assembly, but according to 300.3: "Individual conductors shall be permitted where installed as separate overhead conductors." To support this, 225.6 then says "8 AWG copper or 6 AWG aluminum for a longer span unless supported by messenger wire." In other words, a messenger-wire assembly is not required, but will alleviate the need for larger conductors.

And I definitely can remember having used sunlight resistant THHN/THWN-2 in the past.

I guess I should stop using THHN/THWN-2 for my Service Conductors.

Must be a service loop hole.

Looks like the 300.3 exception does allow this.At least the not allowed to quote says it is.

Section 300.3(A) clearly states that building wire, such as individual insulated conductors identified as THHN, is prohibited from use outside a recognized wiring method. This exception, added for the 2005 Code, points out two long-time permissions: first, allowing individual conductors as festoon lighting and, second, allowing individual conductors as overhead spans.

The only thing I'm wondering is how I would support the conductors if using a messenger-less method.

Just go to your supplier and have them order x amount of feet ACSR drop. Use GRC masts weather heads and simply do it right and professional. I have ran many a drop in my career and still have my jack rope, chicago grips and Burndy hy press.....heck send me a PM.
