Is there anything in the Code that says that a receptacle outlet for a garage door opener needs to be on a 20-amp circuit if it's a dedicated line? Many garages have subpanels with several breakers for various things in the garage. Would we be allowed to wire a garage door opener to a separate 15-amp circuit with no other loads on it?

Garage door openers don't use any more power than garbage disposals, gas furnaces, or refrigerators -- each of which is allowed to be wired to a separate 15A circuit.

210.11 Branch Circuits Required.
(C) Dwelling Units.

(4) Garage Branch Circuits. In addition to the number of branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least one 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other outlets.

Exception: This circuit shall be permitted to supply readily accessible outdoor receptacle outlets.

1.No, there is not.

2. Yes

110.3(B) does apply here- so if the manufacturer says that it MUST have its own dedicated 20 amp..........

Other than that you're good with doing your own 15 for the opener.

On that, some mfg instructions contradict themselves. Just replied about a Wolfe rangetop. Their installation instructions:

Does that need a individual branch circuit or not by 110.3(B)? Same thing may be with garage door openers.

99% of the spec homes in my area are wired with one 15 amp circuit that serves all the outdoor receptacles as well as the garage, fed from the GFCI next to the main panel.

Well 110.3(B) says what it says but thats just dumb.:happyno:

110.3(B) was the only thing I could think of that would be standing in the ops way of his quest to put the GDO on its own 15 ckt- other than that he's good to go.:)
