210.52(G)(1) New requirement.......At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed for each car space.
Now, does that mean that if there are two car stalls, a duplex recep. will be compliant if installed in only one of the stalls?
If a recep. was required in each stall, then the code would have stated such, yes?
Thanks

I hope you all had a good 3 day weekend!

Since both receptacles of a duplex are in the same place, some will argue that it is only one receptacle outlet. (The idea being that the word must be there for a reason.
And if the "stalls" are separated by walls, rather than being arbitrary divisions of an open area, I do not think that an inspector would accept your argument.

However we have had a similar application where a receptacle located between two bathroom sinks could serve both, we have also had though somewhat rare the really small kitchen counter application where there is only enough counter space to need only one outlet, yet we must install two SABC's serving the counters - a MWBC to that one outlet box with a duplex receptacle in it can meet the requirements.

Not exactly the same thing but some similarities.

Could probably use some clarification to help convey the intent of this new section.

Is a duplex installed basically at the divide point of each bay allowed to serve both? If not, how about a four plex installed at same location?

Still not? How about two duplexes in separate outlet boxes but literally as close together as possible?

The more I think about it the more I think it does need some additional clarification.

FYI-

The requirement of 210.52(G)(1) simply says " At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed for each car space." Nothing says that it has to be installed within the "footprint" of that space. However, Due to the fact that originally the submittal was to remove the need for extension cords behind existing appliances and so on....no doubt someone will submit in the 2017 NEC to be within so many feet of the dedicated vehicle space. I am also sure the term " car" will be removed also...to "vehicle" space.

Just thoughts on it....;)

Gold, rcarrol is an inspector.;)

Correct & I want to give the EC the benefit of the doubt.
There are no walls separating the stalls. I'm leaning towards the fact that the code says "recep. for each stall" & not in, that a duplex installed on the garage wall is compliant for a 2 car garage.

Um, I don't think that'll qualify...
Receptacle Outlet. An outlet where one or more receptacles
are installed.
A single or multiple duplex receptacles in one box only counts as one receptacle outlet.

When I see stuff like this.
I think to myself " who would install a single recep in a garage anyway "?

But I tend to think that two receps are needed in this case. Wether it be a quad or two single duplexes.

Agreed. You would need two separate boxes, it wouldn't matter if you installed three-gangs with triplex receptacles per the wording of the NEC.

However, I agree with Ron's interpretation that the two receptacle outlets would not need to be spaced out very far from each other, and are not required to be in the car space (floor outlets?! ).
