In mich I have a person that wants to mount a service in his garage. He does not want to branch of his main service is there a way to tap of the main service drop and send a feeder to tha garage?

You need to check with both the local building department and the power company. Many localities do not allow separate services on a single property, for fear of illegal renting.

You cannot tap off the main service drop without a meter installed on the garage. If the garage is attached this may not fly anyway. If it is detached then you will need to mount a meter on the house or the garage.

230.40 Exception 3 seems to be allow it.

As far as how many meters and where they have to be placed is entirely a power company / local ordnance issue.

I would not call this would be tap a feeder ,.. they would be service entrance conductors and yes if the poco is willing there is no violation.. as it would still be only one service

Michigan has deleted 230.40 exception #3

Rule 835:

Exception 3 of 230.40 of the text in the 2005 NEC is deleted from the Michigan ?Electrical Code

, and the remaining exceptions are renumbered. The exception that was

deleted applied in the case of a single-family dwelling and permitted an outbuilding as well as
the dwelling to be supplied directly from a single service drop or lateral. This is no longer
permitted in Michigan. It is required to provide overcurrent protection on the feeder supplying
the outbuilding. The procedure that is not permitted is illustrated in Figure 1.

Thank you, most of my wiring is in industrial and I am still learning when it comes to residential. It is very helpful to take the articles and match them with others opinions. Again thanks!
