while removeing a gas union from a furnace, there was a spark (the gas was off), what is the cause of this

Re: gas line spark

The gas pipe is either making contact with the water pipe or it has intentionally been bonded to the water pipe and is acting as a return path for current.

Re: gas line spark

Bootleg/false grounds, (Tiing G-N) at appliance electrical outlets, can also provide objectionable-neutral current paths along anything connected to the case or frame of the appliance, including water, gas lines, or people, if those lines make contact with main bondings or earth.

Re: gas line spark

Bob, your comment is the reason why many electricians are uncomfortable with bonding the gas line to the grounding electrical conductor or water pipe, article 250.104 I am not disagreeing with you, I find that electricians have different opinions on this sub. I would like all of yours .thanks
