Company I worked for in the past 2 fire jobs going at same time. We had worked for the GC for a few years and he thought this was a new winner income for him.
1st job - Had us do it T&M, turned in the rough-in invoice, then found out, the insurance company only pays $25 an opening!!! I think we were averaging $35-$38 an opening at the time. My boss wasn't a happy camper!!
2nd job - The insurance wouldn't pay for smokes installed!! Said we were only to return it to pre fire condition. Inspector wouldnt sign off. Actually had to work with home owner and bring in the Lender to force the issue.

Looked at job.

Large older home (1910's-20's) Quite a bit of damage.

They said they had to keep costs down to keep it a rehab. They said if the cost is over 50% of the home's value they would make them tear it down and start over. They figured that they were at 47%. It sure looked like more than 50% of the house was damaged to me.

I figured I would give them a high bid and see what happened.

I asked for a copy of the prints so I could put together a bid. They said they didn't have a copy for me. I asked how I am supposed to prepare a proposal if I didn't have a copy to look at. They told me a copy would always be on site for everyone to use. I couldn't believe it.

I walked away.

Reason you estimate these jobs, and have a written signed contract, for every project big or small, before any work is done.
"My boss wasn't a happy camper" He did it to himself.

Fire restoration/insurance work is the bottom of the barrel as far as MY experience. We worked for a restoration contractor for about a year and too much stuff was done half assed and the jobs were ALWAYS a mess.

It was cool seeing the fire damage though.

we did a job for SM and it was only after their guy had it so screwed up he could not figure it out I told them it would save them money calling us in the beginning but it did not sink in.
