Generac generator undersized?

Generac 22kW has a 100A MCB at the generator. There is no reason to run 4/0 between the generator and the ATS. I use #3 from the ATS to the gen.

I happen to know for a fact that the rxsc/rxsw200A3 ATS have lugs that will fit at least 3/0, because I land them all the time.

If the 4/0 al doesn’t fit, there is plenty of room for a Polaris in the ATS.

22kW is probably my most common unit, and I install them on houses with 200A services all the time. I also install 18kW units on 200A services. Just because the house has a 200A service doesn’t mean it needs it, or draws 200 amps. A proper load Calc will tell you what it needs. Sometimes it will need a 38kW liquid cooled. 😲👍
I think the op’s wire size problem was at the 100 amp breaker in the generator. That’s where he will need the Polaris lugs, or splicer/reducers.

Yeah but that’s why I’m saying, there is no reason to run 4/0 to the gen. Just run #3 from the gen to the ATS.

4/0 only goes from the main panel to the ATS and into the residence.

This reads like a DIY post to be honest..
Agree seems like an electrician would know this and not have to ask here. If this is a service rated ATS, it would likely require a permit and inspection, as the wires from ATS have to be landed in the meter.
So as pointed out the AHJ may require a load calc

He's doing the installation himself and asked me about wiring because he has 4/0 cable but the generator only has 2/0 sized lugs
If I understand this correctly, one is trying to install 4/0 conductors , spliced or not in the extremely small wiring compartment
provided by Generac 22-24K generators? Seems impossible to me.

Agree. That box isn’t but about a 3X5
Just about the perfect size for a #3cu.

Correct. Whoever is doing the install isn’t quite understanding how things work with generators. A lot of people are confused by them.

The genny is feeding the house, and it’s only capable of producing 100A, so 4/0 is not needed, and doesn’t physically fit in the wiring compartment of the generator.

But the “friend” already ran the wires, so……..
