My apprentice is having trouble with a question and asked me about it. It's been a lot of years since I did this and thought someone could help him out. Here's the question he's working on and it should be based on 2023 NEC.

What is the general lighting demand load for a 4000 sq ft dwelling unit, with a 1000 sq. ft. open porch and a 1000 sq ft. garage?

A. 8475 VA
B. 8575 kVA
C. 8675 VA
D. 8775 VA

I think the garage is included in 2023 isn't it? The open porch wouldn't be included. Has anyone done this lately that could help give an explanation to him for this? The correct answer says it's D - 8775 VA.
Thank you.

In reading 220.5(C), I don't think garages are included. I misread it because it only said not to include open porches, but then goes on to say unfinished areas that wouldn't be able to be used as habitable rooms, so it looks like it would only include the 4000 sq ft. dwelling. Still not helping get to the correct answer though.

Here's how I figured it and I'm 1050VA short of their answer.

4000 VA x 3 = 12,000 VA
SABC's and laundry circuits = 4500 VA
Total VA would be 16,500 VA

First 3000 at 100%
Remaining 13,500 VA at 35% = 4725 VA

3000 VA + 4725 VA = 7725VA

The answer they give is 8775 VA.
What am I missing?

So, when we add the garage sq ft, the calcs come out the same as they say, so did the code change to add the garages in 2023?
