I think this is the situation the OP is describing.

The service will have to be disconnected if the generator is going to be connected to the main disconnect, he can't have both connected at the same time. The only "system" supplying the building will be the generator. It is a separately derived system.

this is simply a temp install until power is restored, no transfer switch. gen sits on the ground and feeds a building through the main disconnect

So... bond at generator. Lift any other bonds. Run 5-wire feed to existing main disconnect. Install GES at generator* and bond to existing building GES. (Profit )

*if a separate structure, which was almost the original question. If the genset is inside the building, no other GES needed.

We usually spend more time talking about whether rods are needed at the genset than it would take to install them.
