Household generator inlet 30amps mounted outside adjacent to main service panel.

Question: Does this need to be wired as a service? Thus no MN cable, #8 min CU wire etc......? Code reference?

No you do not treat a generator as a service, you might treat it as a separately derived system.

The reference is in Article 100 definitions.

Only a utility can supply a service, any other supply is considered a feeder.
