Have you considered a meter interlock? Can be pricey but so is changing main panel. If your utility is ok with device it is mostly plug and play adaptor for portable gens. This is just one example of such device.

Buy a few QO2DTI interlocks online, so you have some on hand, and get the panel and breakers at HD.

I have never seen one in my area. I assume POCOs do not allow.
