Thanks for the link. It makes sense that it's as simple as installing one of those in a small 3R box.

Thanks Marc, I'll see if anybody in town has the Midwest box that's premade. I'm assuming that if somebody local stocks them it's cheaper than making your own?

Making your own may or may not be cheaper. Compare the prices of a finished unit, then compare that with your material costs to build one, as well as your time. Finding an empty box that's both suitable and in a 3R configuration, as well as being rain-tight when in use, may be problematic, though.

"This is a very common installation method in my area, but I don't believe it totally squares with the NEC."

Because of that statement, I cannot get upset with the cord issue I see. If the person who helps to control the situation is not helping to control the situation, then there is little that can be said, as all are doing it anyway and it becomes the standard of installation.

I will say the cord is a violation for several reasons in Art 400.

Also, the signs required by 702.8(A)&(B). It is still a hard sell around here for the ECs, as there are many inspectors who are not asking for the signs...especially when the transfer switch is next to the panel. Although there is no relief in the NEC for not installing the signs - or the hardwired cord through a window. ;)

Most generators in our area are hardwired.
I am consulting on a residential job with a 3-phase 2000 amp service and a 2meg genie. I will show the pictures when I can. I had to get permission from the builder to take the pictures.

I didn't know those two went together!

I've built a couple that big, but they're places that are a bit off the beaten path, and the owners like it best that way. I think I posted a few pictures of a similar resi service a few weeks ago.

Now THAT I would like to see a picture of!!! Guess you couldn't take pictures of the grow rooms, eh?

All jokes aside, do you have pics Marc??? Or a list of some of the equipment they utilized?

Thanks for the invite Marc. Nice collection. I will reply to some tomorrow in a PM. I wrote down several, but I don't think anything beats the "Plug on neutral AFCI":D  :D

That's a real product Cutler Hammer developed, but I don't know if it's actually hit the marketplace yet.
