What size generator do I need, to provide power to a 74VDC to 120VAC @ 5KW inverter? Also what additional capability would generator be able handle?

Not Enough Data

Not Enough Data

If the inverter is converting 74VDC to 120VAC, then you must have a 74VDC supply. That means a battery charger. Do you have data on the AC-to-DC converter?

Solid state battery chargers are noted for high harmonic draw. Ferroresonant are much better. However, you need to hold the THD on the voltage low enough for the charger to work. That means oversizing the generator by a factor of 3-5x. So, for 5kW of load, a 25kW generator may be needed.

However, too many unknowns. If the generator is one using inverter technology, it might be more tolerant than a traditional wound generator.

The generator will be a 80VDC supplying power to a voltage regulator. The VR is supplying power to the battery charger and other functions. The current draw is not known @ this moment, however it planning on supplying power to an inverter made by Nova Electric (Model GS-Series). The inverter will draw about 150 watts @ idle and 100 amps @ startup of load.
