Generator

I had a 20 kw propane generator installed at my home. The generator has its own circuit breaker installed in the unit. The inspector had my contractor install a disconnecting device between the generator and the transfer switch. The generator is within 3 feet of the transfer switch.

If you have a gas generator outside of a building with breakers in the generator for the derived feeder, can the feeder go directly into a transfer switch when entering the building or does it have to hit a enclosed circuit breaker or some other kind of disconnect.

If the transfer switch is service rated and located either inside or outside nearest the point of entrance of the feeder then OK, otherwise a service rated disconnect is needed. See 225.31, 225.32, and 225.36
