Gererator Grounding?

If you ground a stand by generator with a 8' -5/8" copper ground rod. Does the transfer switch need to be connected to this ground or to the service ground?

Are you using a transfer switch with switched neutral? Where is the neutral-ground bond? A ground rod is only valuable for touch potential, not fault clearing so there is a ground conductor? Why not bond the generator to both the ground rod and a ground conductor from the service.
