I had my WV for over 2 years. YES it was hard. the first time I took it I only looked into the book a few times boy was I bombed hard. I got a 57% So the next time I really studied for about 3 months I forget what I got but I know you need to get an 80% or better. You would think with a masters I could just pay a fee and get a j card. oh well this just sucks.

Are most or all electrical inspectors IAEI Certified?

What I was thinking is while I understand states want to control, enforce and collect money, if the states that accept the NEC recognize IAEI Certified inspectrors, why wouldn?t it be a good idea for the IAEI or another association to have a single test that is approved by all the states. I would not mind (I prefer) a hard test, one test for all states accepting the NEC, then you just prove you time in trade and pay your money to the state of your choice.

Sometime in the late 80?s or early 90?s there was a group from Utah that attempted to accomplish this, I took the test and thought it was a decent test. But for some reason this group shut down.

Brian I recently took and passed The ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector exam. My first one expired, I could not afford to maintain it. IMHO. It was pretty tough (a lot of Masters exam questions) ICC is Nationally recognized, as they are the new model codes. I am also IAEI certified and a former committee chair.
I know out here in DC they will not list or approve an Inspector, if not Certified along with an attached resume of proven work history. Also, The several Certs I have are very expensive to maintain ie. CEU's: classes, books, testing, etc.

True the north does pay a lot better. I guess it depends on the company. I am from the Pittsburgh PA area. I use to live in MD/WV for 7 years and sold my house and made a killing. I was looking at the Forth Worth area because the homes are still cheap, and not a lot of snow. In MD I would have to pay around $350,000 for a small house. I don't really feel like working the rest of my life to pay for a house. After selling my home in WV I made $174,000 I can buy a home in TX cash and still have money left over. oh well I guess it's 6 one way half a dozen another. It just sucks that there is not a common law with all the states so once you take the journeyman/Master exam all the state recognize it.
Careful, I thought the same until I moved here. Texas hit me with $6000 in school tax, MUD tax, City tax, County tax, ect. So whatever our mortage is add another 300 to it to cover your property tax. Also, Electricians have to take a $48+ 3 hour class to renew our license each year before we pay to take the exam to renew our license. You might do well in the plants but again you'll have to take the NECCA exam. That's about $100 and I'm not to sure what it's about or if I even got the accronym correct...There's always Iraq. There alot of guys here that do 3 month tours there and come home with much cash.

Texas license requirements

I was told that there were only two requirements. You have a hundred bucks? Do you have it on you?
