I'm nearly certain I know the answer to this question but not sure. I've got an existing Essential Electrical System with LS and Critical and a Equipment Branch ATS's. The existing EQ branch is 600A.

But I'm adding a 1000A EB ATS to this switchboard. At 1000A, my brain says Ground Fault. Now I realize that there will be no ground fault for Life Safety and Critical (i.e. for the Emergency Systems) regardless of size. But what about the EQ branch. I believe the answer that it too does not get ground fault.

True?

Thanks,

Mike

All (3) branches are the "essential" electrical system and fall under the requirements of emergency systems per 517.26, which includes the equipment branch. So your suspicion is correct.

However, do note that 700.26 does not require ground fault on emergency systems but only for the alternate source (ground fault indication only must be provided per 700.6(D)). The utility source overcurrent protection device will still require ground fault protection.
