The following is an interesting report covering many years.
http://www.mikeholt.com/documents/freestuff/NEMA-GFCI-Field-Test-Survey-Report-January-2001.pdf
I just skimmed the report and my broad reaction is:
Seems like breakers have a bigger problem than receptacles.
There are many SCR failures.
There are many integrated circuit failures.
There are a number of coil failures, but these probably result from SCR failures.
Seemed like a lot of problems in CA from paint over the face of the GFCI.
This study had nothing to do with false trips.
