The following is an interesting report covering many years.

I just skimmed the report and my broad reaction is:

Seems like breakers have a bigger problem than receptacles.
There are many SCR failures.
There are many integrated circuit failures.
There are a number of coil failures, but these probably result from SCR failures.

Seemed like a lot of problems in CA from paint over the face of the GFCI.

This study had nothing to do with false trips.
