GFCI for 2 prong outlets

The code allows us to put in gfci outlets for 2 prong or 2 wire outlets with no ground. What does this do for the circuit and or personal protection? Thank you in advance..

The GFCI device will provide protection for people who may become part of a current path. It is not a replacement for grounding.
 
You can still feel a shock but the duration will be less than if you had no protection at all. As was mentioned, the GFCI doesn't replace the EGC but is a safer alternative for nongrounded circuits.
