Is it required to have a gfci on a 4 wire dryer outlet? I see the NEC reference saying that all new install shall be 4 wire type with neutral and ground but the GFCI section references only 125 VAC not 250 VAC. All our dryers on the base are within 6 feet of sinks so our safety office is writing them up for GFCI but I need the actual reference to complete the upgrade or it will not happen. Any inputs greatly appreciated.

GFCI is not required for 240 V receptacles in dwelling units. Perhaps your safety office needs to understand the purpose of GFCIs is to protect those using portable electrical devices plugged into receptacles from shock. There is not the same exposure with a dryer.

If you use a GFCI on a dryer and there is a failure of the EGC you will be providing good protection. If the dryer is inferior and has leakage current to the cabinet, then the GFCI with a good EGC will detect the defective dryer.

The NEC is a minimum, nothing wrong with doing a better job. If there are nuisance trips, then the cause needs to be determined.

For a high reliability system redundancy is an important tool.
