Can you use a GFCI recep on a circuit protected with an arc fault breaker? Why or why not? Application: out door recep tied into bedroom cicuit on new construction.

Re: GFCI on arc fault circuit

The GFI receptacle and AFCI breaker behave well together.

As I think of it, if the outside outlet stops working, the reset is either at the breaker or the receptacle. . .pretty much like any other GFI receptacle in any non-AFCI protected situation.

Re: GFCI on arc fault circuit

How often have we ran service calls on new homes because the ceiling fan won't work.Customers had problems with that simple issue. The call will be saying my outside receptacle won't work. Now we need to exsplain both resets to them and if 1 or other still has a problem then good luck.Yes easy for sparky but maybe not for customer.I would avoid the problem unless cost is an issue.Customes are not always smart enough to handle this.Lets see you exsplain this to a 60 year old widow and then hand her a bill for the trip.KISS

Re: GFCI on arc fault circuit

I don't think there is any way to protect ourselves from the service call that is caused by a burned out light bulb, the tripped breaker that doesn't indicate, the S-Type Fusestat that isn't seated all the way. . .

I've even had a restaurant prep kitchen, in the height of pre-lunch rush, call me in to simply turn on the light switch for them (a loaf of bread, falling off a shelf, had brushed the switch during its decent).

Re: GFCI on arc fault circuit

We can't stop all the calls over stupid things but we can try to limit them.If they happen on out of warranty then no problem cause i just write the bill for ther min. service call. You will find it hard getting paid on that new home even if it is not a covered item.Would be best to put them on dedicated outside gfci circuit. But that is more costly. It's your choice.Just what does it cost to send a truck to reset and exsplain ?

Re: GFCI on arc fault circuit

Had this fun service call.Hall bath receptacle ,rear outside outlet and dressing table in master bedroom all dead.Only gfci we can see are in master bath, laundry, garage, and the 2 for kitchen. So where did the feed come from for the receptacles ?
Behind about 200 boxes stacked 7 feet high in 2 car garage was a second gfci receptacle that was tripped.Renters had no idea it was even there. That took some digging.Ace in the hole was boss had same home in same hood. After calling him the problem was easy to fix

Pecoman:
Why not use a AFCI/GFCI circuit breaker. Only a few $ more than an AFCI. I can't tell you who makes it, but their initials are Cutler Hammer.
However, if the outside GFCI trips it takes out the bedroom branch circuit, not a great feature. Put the GFCI on a different circuit.
