Is there any truth to this? 2008 code is omitting the requirement to have a 125 volt receptacle located within 25' of any air handling unit/rooftop equipment.

Here is the 2008-- unchanged

NEC2008 said:
210.63 Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Equipment Outlet.
A 125-volt, single-phase, 15- or 20-ampere-rated receptacle outlet shall be installed at an accessible location for the servicing of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle shall be located on the same level and within 7.5 m (25 ft) of the heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle outlet shall not be connected to the load side of the equipment disconnecting means.
Exception: A receptacle outlet shall not be required at one- and two-family dwellings for the service of evaporative coolers.

And of course 210.8 says it must be GFCI protected

A related question.
Wasn't this requirement once for a receptacle within 75' from the equipment?
If so, when did it change? (Oldest NEC I still have is the '96 - it was 25' then)

Changed in '93. The 75' rule first shows up in '87.

My guess is the HVAC industry didn't want their poor, overworked techs to carry anything longer than a 25' cord up the ladders.

Have you ever seen the HVAC crews extension cord. I think the dang thing is maybe 14 gauge, twisted into knots, and the jacket is off on half the cord. Please 25' is enough or their drills won't turn.

OK, 50 foot. But you must deduct the knots.

Don't forget the 6" of jacket pulled out of the molded ends.
