GFCI or Single Recp?

Re: GFCI or Single Recp?

I can't give you any specifics at the moment. It had something to do with setting kitchen cabinets on fire. I will check around with some of the other inspectors. Maybe they will have more specifics on the issue. As for the GFCI, the newer rope I saw required GFCI protection. Again that was the mfg and it was plainly specified in the instructions. I don't remember the brand but I was thinking someone told me they were all going to that.

Second, I don't think any rope lights are listed to run "through" any kind of wall or cabinet. They must remain on the surface, and the same goes for their cords.
I'm curious about this. Is this just a light cord issue? How about Microwave cords? Are they OK 'cause the maufacturer approves running the cord thru the cabinet bottom?

I have some Data that I compiled with my own eyes!

I have seen many of these rope lights melted, charred, burnt and the after math of one (Display) that started on fire at a Home Depot!!!
I've seen it happen at the ends of the ropes, in the middle, indoors and outdoors. I have never seen any reason as to why it happened, they all seemed to be installed correctly. (Except for the ones at a restaurant that someone bypassed the fuses with a chunk of metal!) Stupid fuse kept blowing! :) I'll be using a GFCI breaker and dedicate a circuit for all of the rope lights in this house. :)

Re: GFCI or Single Recp?

The first one I saw was around May of this year. I don't know how long before that. I had the same reaction as you. I am wanting to say they recalled some brand(s) but I may be wrong about that. Thats when I saw they had started requiring the GFCI. I wish I could remember the brand name.

Re: GFCI or Single Recp?

Did I not read too long ago that UL is or has changed the Standard for Rope lighting? And is not permitting the sale of Rope lighting in kit form, but has to be sold to length, complete with all of the necessary components for that particular length???

Here is a link to the UL page that will link you to much more info on this type of installation - good stuff ;)

Re: GFCI or Single Recp?

Thanks Roger. Sometimes my mind works kind of funny. It is good to see that I did remember this properly.

BTW: if you Google rope lights, you will see there are plenty of venders still selling the long lengths and field kits.
