Hello all. Quick question. Per 210.8 (B) (2) I would imagine GFCI protection would be required for countertops in a restaurant kitchen. I may be just a 1st year but the 2020 NEC seems pretty clear on this. I ask because my boss was a bit upset that I replaced five, 20amp, dedicated circuits that were duplex receptacles with five 20amp GFCIs. Thank you and happy new year to you all.

Yep. Could have been legal when originally installed.

When we replace devices, are we not required to bring it up to current code? Saw the receptacles were originally installed in 1990. Since then GFCI protection is required but is it only in new installations? Basically if you run a new circuit

406.4(D)(3) Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection.
Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protected receptacles shall be provided where replacements are made at receptacle outlets that are required to be so protected elsewhere in this Code.

And there it is! Thank you my friend

At one time it was just the 15 and 20 amp 120 volt receptacles. At one point they added I believe up to 50 amp single phase 150 or less to ground then more recently added up to 100 amp three phase 150 or less to ground. Simple receptacle replacement on any of those actually requires GFCI protection to be added if not present.
