GFCI Question

I was told that GFCIs are to be replaced after the 12th trip or reset per manufacture's recommendation. Is there any truth to this? Has anyone else heard this? If so, where can I find it written? Thanks!

Pick a manufacturer and read their literature.

I've never heard of it.

I never heard of that either. They supposed to tested monthly so according to that myth you would need to replace them every 12 months.

After looking at the innards of two AFCIs that the trip coil had failed, maybe it should be replaced before you test it the last time.

Yes, because the self test does not test to see if the solenoid can open the circuit.

Purely anecdotal....
During my inspection career and prior to self testing I found about 1/3 of the GFCIs that had been used at prior construction sites failed at the new site. After self test hit the market about the same number failed but none had power... the self test seemingly works well.
