The question is how close can a bathroom GFI receptacle can be to a hydromassage bathtub. as now we have bathrooms with vanities and tubs right next to each other. I have a custome that wants a receptacle at the end of the vanity with a tub right next to it. This appears at first a code violation but I am looking for back-up as the code as I read it says you can not install a receptacle in a tub or shower space but no distance away from it. any advise is appreciated.

There is no required distance "away" from it. Draw an imaginary line up the outside of the tub towards the ceiling, the receptacle can be anywhere outside of that line.

While I agree with Bryan's answer for the purposes of the question asked, Idon't agree that you "Treat a hydro-tub just like any regular tub" for all GFCI issues. For example, some hotels have hydromassage tubs in places that aren't bathrooms. In a non-bathroom application, GFCI protection wouldn't be required for anything near a regular tub, however, 680.71 does require protection for a 5' dimension from the tub, even if it is installed outside the bathroom.
