A receptacle above a countertop in a laundry room, next to a sink. Does it need GFI protection? The only code I can find is 550.13(B)
which states that a "bar sink" would need to be protected.

I always protected them also, until I stumbled upon the Mike Holt newsletter from March 24, 2003. This question was asked and he simply stated "nope".

Re: GFI in laundry room.

There are some things we were required to do beyond NEC in the county i wired in for 15 years.Often there codes are beaten into my head and i forget just who made the rule.Hard to break old habits.

Re: GFI in laundry room.

The 2002 National Electric Code, to the best of my recollection, does not require it. BUT, good rule of thumb is to make it a GFCI provided its with in 5 feet of the basin.

Re: GFI in laundry room.

I have never required the GFCI, for reasons stated above. That being said, what do I do on an inspection if the GFCI is installed in the laundry and is wired correctly (by that I mean correct polarity, no opens, and properly grounded), and the receptacle doesn't trip. If you decide to put one in when it is not required, is it required to function properly?

Re: GFI in laundry room.

Ryan i think if it is there it MUST work.It implies safety. Now if his cure is remove it and replace with non gfci, then set him free
