Ok so we can have a receptacle at tubs edge, plug a radio in it with a 6 ft cord and place it on the tubs edge but DON`T PUT A CEILING FAN WITHIN 3 FT OF TUBS EDGE
How does a thirty inch separation protect anyone who is stupid enough to place a cord and plug connected device on the edge of the tub? The cords are usually at least six feet long. In the scenario that Don has set up the thirty inch clearance would have to make a difference in the outcome.

Jeff Foxworthy is right the stupid people should have to wear signs!

The part that gets me is we need 10 feet for a pool or hot tub.Do we get less wet in a tub?
And i have had people wanting a TV in the bathroom.

No Jim, we don't get more wet in a pool or hut tub, we get a voltage gradient. Hence the equipotential bonding required by 680.26/680.74

Ryan, just what would likely happen if we tried to use that outlet next to the bathtub (assuming gfci worked)? And no i won't test it :D

Re: GFI plug, distance from a shower

With all this in mind why doesn't NEC have a shall not here.Without it how can we as electricians refuse to install it next to the tub.If its on the drawing and not a NEC violation then we are stuck with installing something we probably all feel is a bit dangerous

Re: GFI plug, distance from a shower

I tried to submit a code change to the 1999 NEC, but was rejected on each one. You can see the proposals (4 total) at log # 332, page 46 , log # 331, page 665 , log # 330, page 702, & log # 329, page 711

Once you get into the ROP (it is a .pdf file) then use the find option, to locate the log #, or scroll through to the page.

Maybe someone could propose a change, improving on my proposals, in order to get this in place.
