Do you need GFI protectionf for a recessed light fixture in a bathtub/shower stall? And if so where in the NEC is it. I just failed a final for this, and the inspector came when I wasnt there.

No you do not need gfci protection for a recessed light in a shower stall. Damp location fixture will usually do.

You did'nt specify whether this was a dwelling or recreational.if it's the latter then the inspector was correct.
551.53(B)
(B) Shower Luminaires (Fixtures) If a luminaire (lighting fixture) is provided over a bathtub or in a shower stall, it shall be of the enclosed and gasketed type and listed for the type of installation, and it shall be ground-fault circuit-interrupter protected.

The "recreational" you are referring to is under part 4 of the Recreational Vehicles and Recreational Vehicle Parks Article of the NEC. Not applicable anywhere else.

The requirements for GFCI protection are in 210.8, and they only talk about receptacle outlets.

I often install Panasonic vent-lights over the shower area, and the installation specs state it meets requirements for this area "when protected by GFCI".

I too failed an inspection for the same reason, but found out it was a local code requirement. I simply used a device that incorporates a single pole switch with a GFCI. http://www.passandseymour.com/pdf/E06x.pdf.

It was the easiest way to correct the problem.

Yes, but some light manufactures require it...

Can you name one? I've never seen a fixture that required GFCI protection in a tub area.

I have not seen a light that requires GFCI either but there are fan/lights that require GFCI when installed over a tub-- manufacturers requirement not NEC.

Washington State has a state rule that requires GFCI protection for a luminarie in a bathtub or shower with exposed metal parts

I have not installed a fan/light that could be used over a shower that didn't require GFCI protection. Trevors reference was to a light only.
